The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, adopted by world leaders at the United Nations, is a broad and ambitious plan of action. At its core are 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and 169 targets with the overarching objective of leaving no one behind. This ambitious plan to enhance prosperity, eradicate poverty and protect the planet is recognized as essential for a sustainable world.
Accreditation, with other quality infrastructure institutions, including metrology, standardization, conformity assessment and market surveillance, provides the technical foundations that are critical to the functioning of societies. It is an enabler for industrial development, trade competitiveness in global markets, efficient use of natural and human resources, food safety, health and environmental protection. The positive impact of the accreditation and of the accredited services (testing, calibration, certification, inspection, validation and verification) is therefore clearly aligned with the SDGs, and provides with the solutions to implement, measure and monitor many of the objectives and targets of the Agenda 2030.
With the universal language of the illustration, this brochure depicts the benefits of the accreditation and of the accredited services for the support and the implementation of the 17 SDGs in our political, social, economic and daily life context.

NO POVERTY
End poverty in all its forms everywhere

By promoting best practices in all economic sectors, accredited services support the production and equitable distribution of food and consumer goods, and the sustainable development of jobs. Accreditation also plays a role in fighting corruption, which threatens free competition and market efficiency, and undermines the credibility of institutions and companies, increasing public spending and hindering economic growth.

ZERO HUNGER
End hunger, achieve food security, improve nutrition and promote sustainable agriculture

Accredited services such as food testing, restaurant inspections and agri-food product controls ensure safe and healthy food. They enable the development of sustainable agriculture and food production, and ensure adequate food and clean water. Accredited certifications and laboratory tests help prevent unsafe or environmentally harmful products from entering the market.

GOOD HEALTH AND WELL-BEING
Ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages

The growing demand for efficient health systems is met by the services of accredited medical laboratories and certified facilities. Biobanks also contribute to the protection of health, ensuring the availability of reproducible and comparable materials for scientific research. Population growth, life expectancy, international travel and medical progress increase the demand for competent and guaranteed services.

QUALITY EDUCATION
Provide inclusive and equitable quality education and learning opportunities for all

Education is fundamental to grow skills. By improving their skills, knowledge and abilities, people can be more productive, innovative and resilient. Professional attestations, the inspection of educational institutes and the certification of management systems for face-to-face and remote learning services, are accredited services for improving the quality of education and encourage the growth of professionals.

GENDER EQUALITY
Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls

Gender equality is a fundamental right. By using gender-sensitive standards and fostering technical competence and inclusive knowledge, accredited certifications have a positive impact on gender equality and women’s economic empowerment. Thanks to independent and impartial methods, accredited services promote equal opportunities whereby women and men collaborate on an equal footing in decision-making and leadership processes.

CLEAN WATER AND SANITATION
Ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all

Accredited tests on water, certification of supply management systems and inspection on distribution networks provide the technical tools to effectively manage water resources, supporting national and local regulatory authorities, water utility operators and waste water, industries and households. This helps improve water quality by reducing pollution and preventing the release of harmful chemicals and materials.

AFFORDABLE AND CLEAN ENERGY
Ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy

Solving the energy issue is probably one of the most difficult global challenges, together with climate change, where accreditation is making a difference. Accredited services, such as certification of energy management systems, inspection of energy plants and certified professions for the recycling of greenhouse gases are the basis of national public policies to implement the energy transition.

DECENT WORK AND ECONOMIC GROWTH
Promote inclusive and sustainable economic growth, employment and decent work for all

In an increasingly complex world of work, from a social, technological and regulatory point of view, effective measures and good practices are even more needed in order to promote a culture of safety and prevention. Eliminating and keeping the main risk factors under control makes production processes more efficient and encourages the creation of decent and valuable jobs in industry and in industry-related services.

INDUSTRIES, INNOVATION AND INFRASTRUCTURE
Build resilient infrastructure, promote sustainable industrialization and foster innovation

Accreditation promotes socially inclusive and environmentally sustainable economic development by improving infrastructure, industry and innovation. The accredited services effectively support new technologies, favor economic and industrial growth and increase the performance of companies on the markets, ensuring that all countries can benefit from international trade and technological progress.

REDUCED INEQUALITIES
Reduce inequality within and among countries

Accredited services are a fundamental element for the diffusion of the rules which ensure the circulation of safe and quality products and services, at the heart of any healthy economic growth and social development. Accreditation strengthens this system, contributing to the reduction of inequalities, because it creates a common ground that guarantees compliance with international regulations and standards in all sectors, from industry to healthcare.

SUSTAINABLE CITIES AND COMMUNITIES
Make cities inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable

Certifications for road safety, tests on construction products and inspections in the building sector are used in public policies as levers to develop and make cities and metropolitan areas increasingly livable. Accredited services can be engines of economic growth in harmony with the quality of life, through the reduction of CO2 emissions and the development of adequate and safe infrastructures.

RESPONSIBLE CONSUMPTION AND PRODUCTION
Ensure sustainable consumption and production patterns

The impact of human activities on the planet has reached unprecedented levels, threatening sustainability, the management of natural resources and the protection of the biosphere. The use of accredited services favors an integrated approach to economic development, in which environmental sustainability is a fundamental priority, also through the certification of recycled products and the verification and validation of ethical sustainability claims.

CLIMATE ACTION
Take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts

Slowing down climate change is possible, thanks to the ecological transformation of economic activities and investments in the production and supply of “zero-emission” services. The accreditation offers technical tools for improving environmental performance, reducing the spread of contaminants and greenhouse gases and controlling waste and pollution, through certifications, inspections and calibrations.

LIFE BELOW WATER
Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources

The constant deterioration of coastal waters due to pollution and ocean acidification has a negative effect on ecosystems and biodiversity, as well as local fisheries. Accredited tests, inspections and certifications are a strategic element for the transition towards sustainable aquaculture, to guarantee safe bathing waters, to protect health and the marine environment, and to control emissions from maritime transport.

LIFE ON LAND
Protect, restore and promote sustainable use of the earth’s ecosystem

Nature and animals are essential for our survival, but as a result of human activities they are under increasing stress. Thanks to accreditation, forest certifications prevent the exploitation of forests, promoting a sustainable and traceable supply of wood, and guarantee the health and well-being of farm animals, as well as controlling the spread of contaminants.

PEACE, JUSTICE AND STRONG INSTITUTIONS
Promote just, peaceful and inclusive societies

Efficient and responsible companies and institutions rely on effective management at all levels, from SMEs to multinationals, from local institutions to central government, to ensure the achievement of objectives and compliance with regulations. Accredited services ensure the application of the highest quality and safety standards, allowing risk control and compliance to regulations even in the most sensitive sectors, such as information security and privacy.

PARTNERSHIPS FOR THE GOALS
Revitalize the global partnership for sustainable development

Accreditation, responding to international standards, European regulations and national provisions, represents a system with a high level of integration in markets and public policies, promoting the sharing of best practices and constant improvement. The underlying subsidiarity between public and private makes accredited services a key tool for tackling the social and economic challenges of growth and sustainable development.
